Until now, if you wanted to see the Alvin Ailey Dance Theater in action, you needed to buy tickets for one of their live shows either in New York or on tour. But now, finally, the troupe’s excellent, innovative work is available on film—at least in a few cities on a few dates. Revelations, the iconic Ailey work, was first performed in 1960 and remains a show-stopper of modern dance. The choreography and music draw on African-American artistic traditions; the themes of grace, faith, and sacred rites are the heart of this tremendous and enduring piece of American art.

The film, titled Chroma, Grace, Takademe, Revelations shows in Sedona, Arizona on July 24, New York City on July 26, and Allentown, Pennsylvania on August 11. If you’re in Europe, the company is touring its live show there this fall, and Alvin Ailey II, the company’s secondary touring company, hits US venues in the autumn months as well. Glance at Alvin Ailey’s calendar for exact dates and locations. Yes, it’s frustrating that the release and the live dates are so limited, but let’s cross our collective fingers that the movie will soon be available on Netflix. It’s a revelation!
