The happiest handbags you’ve ever seen

These playful faces with sweet smiles, winks, and googly eyes put the purse in personality.

On a recent window shopping field trip to the brand new Barney’s store in Chelsea, stylist Lani Inlander and I were pleasantly surprised to be greeted by rows of smiling faces—and I’m not just talking about the store attendants (though they welcomed us, too). As we entered on the ground floor of the beautifully redone department store, the latest Anya Hindmarch and Fendi collections literally winked and smirked at us from across the room, drawing us closer. Frankly, it would have been rude not to go over and say hello.

I immediately got into a staring contest with a black googly eyed clutch by Anya Hindmarch, while Lani, who is a regular contributor at For Her, made eyes at a Fendi’s Punkarlito bag charm (shaped like Karl Lagerfeld with a mohawk of pink fur). We found these animated bags so entertaining and refreshing it was hard to tear ourselves away.

But we aren’t the first ladies to discover these cuties. In fact, the bags have been making steady appearances on the shoulders of models and bloggers on the streets outside of Fashion Week shows in recent months.

“We believe that above anything else, fashion should make you smile,” Anya Hindmarch says of the brand’s Smiley line. And it’s true, you can’t help but smile back at a bag that’s already grinning up at you, or giggle at a pair of goofy eyes sewn into a chic carryall. And, even though the prices are as wild as the designs (some range in the thousands!) our editors decided to round up some of our favorite luxe designer bags that pack a big personality—if only to inspire you, or better yet, make you smile.
