Earlier this week, two of Seattle’s most beloved newlyweds, Russell and Ciara Wilson, announced that they’re expecting their first child, just a few short months after tying the knot. We couldn’t be happier for the pair and their coming addition. Russell and Ciara are practicing Christians who have been outspoken about their decision to abstain from sex before marriage.

This public commitment to abstinence is a rare display among most young people—and especially among Hollywood couples, who aren’t exactly known for their chastity. While NFL star Russell was previously married to his high-school sweetheart and singer Ciara has a child from a previous relationship, the two decided to wipe the slate clean, and committed themselves to remaining abstinent until they were married. In a dating climate where premarital sex is seen as something to expect after almost no time at all, the Wilsons’ very public decision is incredibly refreshing.

A handful of other celebrities have also been outspoken about their commitment to chastity—Tim Tebow, Tamera Mowry, Jessica Simpson, and Carrie Underwood, to name a few—but this trend is almost unheard of in our hyper-sexualized society. Almost all of these celebrities have chosen abstinence because of a personal religious conviction, and many of them have received criticism for their choice. In fact, many people aren’t quite sure what they think—or believe—about practicing abstinence before marriage.

The Wilsons’ decision reminds us that it is never too late to commit oneself to a pure, brand-new relationship. Rather than giving up and succumbing to temptation as soon as one mistake had been made, this lovely couple chose to adopt this mentality later in life.

On a late-night talk show, when discussing their decision to wait, a fellow guest on the show asked Ciara if she was lying, and proceeded to question if Russell was gay—managing to land two insults in one blow. Wilson has been notably outspoken that his desire for purity comes from his religious conviction: At an event in July 2015, he said: “For me, I knew that God had brought me into her life to bless her, and for her to bless me. And to bless so many people with the impact that she has [and] that I have. We’re not going to be perfect by any means—you know, life’s not perfect, nobody is perfect. But he’s anointed both of us. I know that he’s calling for us to do something miraculous, something special. And I told her, and she completely agreed with the fact that … ‘can we love each other without that?’ And if you can love somebody without that, then you can really love somebody.”

The Wilsons’ decision reminds us that it is never too late to commit oneself to a pure, brand-new relationship. Rather than giving up and succumbing to temptation as soon as one mistake had been made, this lovely couple chose to adopt this mentality later in life. No matter what has happened in the past, God always delights when His children walk in purity and choose to honor Him in this special, all-too-rare way.

We’re so thankful that this high-profile couple is setting such a great example for young people everywhere—they truly are a shining light of honor, integrity and character in a world that can always use more goodness. We wish them a happy and healthy pregnancy, and look forward to seeing the sweet face of their little bundle, coming late this spring!
