One-piece wonders: Taylor Swift and Gigi Hadid go patriotic in striped swimsuits

The standard summer bikini is officially being out-shined by pretty one-piece bathing suits.

Women’s bathing suits have come a long way from the floral swim caps and uncomfortable looking full-body suits of yore. (Thank goodness! Imagine attempting to stay cool in a bodysuit, let alone the ridiculous knee-length tan lines.) But for many women, it can also feel like the progression of swimsuits has come a little too far. Cutting too high up our rears, diving too low into our cleavage, and becoming too, well, non-existent in the middle. Frankly, the annual hunt for a flattering swimsuit that is neither bare-all nor ugly cover-all can be an exhausting one, with many stores offering triangle bikinis or your grandma’s beach getup, but not much in between.

So now that the summer fashion tides are turning in favor of pretty one-pieces—and even famous, skinny young things like singer Taylor Swift, 26, and supermodel Gigi Hadid, 21, are choosing to wear them rather than bikinis—I, for one, am a little relieved. I love the idea of elegant, form-flattering, and feminine one-pieces, and I’m excited for their return. But beyond that, I’m thrilled to see the gradual rise of fun, practical one-pieces that women can run and swim in (you know, those activities you’re supposed to do at the beach) while also looking cool and confident … which is exactly what Taylor and Gigi demonstrated with their identical fourth of July themed, red, white and blue striped swimsuits. This particular patriotic pool party attire is called the Anne-Marie suit, and is available online for celebrities and regular gals alike.

The striped suits were cute, and comfortable—or, at least, they must have been in order to withstand all the water-sliding, swimming and jumping that the celebrities put them through at Taylor Swift’s fourth of July party. The Grammy-winning singer, best known for her hit Shake It Off, hosted the holiday bash in the backyard and beach front of her Watch Hill, Rhode Island home, complete with a pool, blow-up water slide, her usual entourage of ladies (a pregnant Blake Lively, Karlie Kloss, Cara Delevigne, and more) as well as Taylor’s new and very-talked-about beau, actor Tom Hiddleston.

Regardless of what you think of Taylor Swift, her music, her mob of celebrity friends, or #HiddleSwift, it’s nice to see a little fun-loving one-piece action in the public eye. Especially if young girls are watching and listening to Taylor’s every move anyway, and even more so if it means designers and stores will continue to put good-looking and well-fitting one piece swimsuits on the shelves, giving us regular ladies (no matter what size or shape we are) more cute options. It’s a little baby step toward helping women everywhere feel confident enough to take back the beach, and look great all summer long.
