Long-distance grandfather shares life lessons with grandsons through Instagram drawings (PHOTOS)

Using his social media account called “Drawings for My Grandchildren,” a grandfather passes on some very worthwhile lessons to faraway loved ones.

A grandparent is that little piece of treasure in any child’s life; offering unconditional love, pearls of wisdom, fun, cuddles and candy—as well as the odd babysitting service when mom and dad need a date night! Retired grandfather, Chan Jae, was just that for his two grandsons, Arthur and Allan when they lived in Brazil together. So when the boys relocated to Korea with their parents, the sad grandad’s family were worried he was going to become depressed.

Mom and son, Ji Lee, devised a plan to keep him busy; persuading the 75-year-old to use his artistic talents to post pictures for his grandsons on Instagram. Though it took time to get the hang of the new medium (more like months of convincing, really), the Instagram account helped bring a new meaning to Chan Jae’s life. It also keeps the grandsons updated on family news, and provides a digital legacy for generations to come, who will be able to see this beautiful archive of cultural traditions and worthwhile lessons.

Embracing the wonders of Instagram, the project has become a true family affair, with Ji Lee—who recently became a father to a little boy named Astro—spending precious moments teaching his dad. Meanwhile, Chan Jae’s wife writes little stories for each picture, and Ji Lee’s sister helps with the translating. Although the family is spread over three continents they are now in contact every day.

Ji Lee explains the family’s story on this video he posted on Facebook. So far it’s received 2.9 million views and counting, and Chan Jae has garnered nearly 100,000 followers on Instagram. A valuable lesson for us all: embrace change (even in the form of newfangled technology) at any age!

Although a picture may tell a thousand words, Chan Jae’s seems to exude one: love. We’ve selected some of his drawings with the little lessons he gives to his grandsons.

The value of a saintly life

Do you guys know Mother Theresa who dedicated her life helping the poor in India? She died in 1997 and we've read she has become a saint in the catholic church. We are learning more about what is a saint.

Beauty in the small things

In São Paulo, autumn, spring and summer are all together. In front of the school where grandma teaches, there are lots of fallen leaves on the ground and one would think it's the fall season, but when you look up, there are many green leaves saying it's their time. The tree is getting rid of the old leaves while growing new ones.

Respect equals love

It's amazing we can watch Korean TV dramas in Brazil. This touching scene is from a hit drama called "Gentlemen Tailors." A son is asking for forgiveness to his father for leaving the house. The son was full of desire to explore new adventures. His dad is looking at his son with full of feelings. Can you feel it?

Know your history

October 9th is the Hangul (Korean Alphabet) day. In 1443, Sejong emperor realized Korean people couldn't express themselves with their own language. With this in mind, he invented the new alphabet Hangul. Hangul is celebrated by linguists around the world as a scientific alphabet. There are 14 consonants and 10 vowels. 나무(tree): Consonantㄴ + Vowelㅏ = 나 [NA] Consonant ㅁ + Vowel ㅜ = 무 [MU] #drawing #watercolor #hangul #koreanalphabet #hangulday #scientificalphabet #greatkingsejong Dia 9 de outubro comemora-se o dia do Hangul. Grandparents will always love you

Astro, who's not even two years old, is looking up the tree with his neck stretched. Astro is full of curiosity. Grandma wonders what he may be thinking. Grow fast like the tree and tell us what's in your mind, Astro.

Grandmas are heroes

Treat animals with kindness

Empathy is key

I saw this man on one morning on the streets of São Paulo. He was carrying bags upon bags. What is he thinking while was walking with his head down? I hope he can soon unload his bags and rest.
